Meeting Minutes 4/23/13

We reviewed what happened during the interview with the U.C. Staff:
-UC staff log incident of what was taken, once reported
-Take film section and bring it to the police
They take no further steps in the process, and never hear anything else about it ( if it is solved).

The cameras in place have coverage of 60%-80%.
-Mirror reflection creates terrible resolution.
--we decided to still look into it as a potential scare tactic.

They informed us that the cubbies used to have a door with a lock option  but the students did not use them. Also they used to be structured going the long way. There was half the amount of cubbies, and people had their stuff lined up on the ground. Also the light reflected badly off of the top of the cubbies.

-Worked w/ architect and other campuses to get the new set up. The camera’s have the best set up possible with the two cameras.

Only had 2-3 cases reported a year

One specific question we have for them is about the numbers of reports to them.

Class Questions to Address

Did you talk to anyone about the logic behind the cubby idea?

-->  I added a question into the interview for UC staff to ask about this.

Cubbies with locks would be ideal.

--> I looked up potential pricing for this type of cubby and will bring to the next meeting.

What if you used your falcon card to open lockers?

-->  I looked up the pricing of a card reader and it would be way too expensive to install a system like that, so it's probably not a feasible solution for us at this point.

Meeting Minutes 4/9

We met today at 4:45 to start discussing what direction we want to go in for the solution to our problem.  We mentioned that we should all take a look at the questions our peers posed following our presentation and bring some take-aways from those to the next meeting.

Ideas for potential solutions:
-students can bring their own locks to put on cubbies with doors
-more security cameras
-mirrors strategically places to increase visibility of students between cubbies
-changing the orientation or location of the cubbies
-ID swiping for locker use
-security staff

We also discussed pros and cons of each of these options.  Some drawbacks included expense, possible technology glitches, limited space, and cooperation of Sodexo and UC staff and the University Police.

In order to get more insight to which of these options might be the best and most feasible we are going to work on getting interviews with the University Police and someone on the University Center staff.  We're also going to talk to more students who have been victims of theft from the cubby area and here more individual stories and how each case was handled.  Amanda is going to look into rough estimates of prices for things like another security camera or cubbies with doors.

Our next meeting will be next Tuesday, April 16 at 4:45 in the library.

Class Comments after Short Presentation

* Did you talk to anyone about the logic behind the cubby idea?
* Do you think the cubbies are too small?  Will you do locks on the cubbies? What are other schools doing?
* Are there issues with the UC design that won't allow certain avenues of security?
* How long does the campus save the security camera videos? Does campus security have an office in the UC so they can respond more quickly?
* Even if you had a police officer by the cubbies, how would they know if the person was taking their own things?
* The solutions you suggest involve students paying, do you think there would be anything that is free for students?
* Is there anyway we could just get free locker instead of having to pay for them? People are already having a problem finding a spot in the cubbies.
* Is there a budget for security on campus?
* I could put you in contact with a student who had her laptop stolen, Korean keyboard and all (Elliot Novak).  At my previous school, I was repeatedly told not to use the cafeteria cubbies by RA's and staff, our cafeterias were in the basement of each dorm, so dropping stuff off in our room was easy -- also, we could bring it in.
* Could there be an actual security person by the cubbies?
* Would it be cheaper to have a type of insurance for stolen items?  What about installing "dummy" cameras, to make people think they're being watched?  Where else on campus are there security issues? Your statistics seems skewed.
* Could there be an option of bringing your laptop into the commons with you? Can't you already do that?
* Could more cameras become costly?  Who will review them?  Could Sedexo at least change their policy with purses?
* Cubbies with locks would be ideal.
* Can lockers with locks be placed in the eating areas? Have criminals ever been caught? Fun video!
* Nick Anders, Cara Rubis, and Joan Mayen would be perfect people to talk to about your problem.
* What if you used your Falcon card to open lockers?  What is the reason behind the University Policy of leaving personal items in a cubby?
* How are the rules inflexible? What are the University Police policies for going after criminals?
* Get University Police onboard, they did nothing to help me!
* Can you think of a free solution for students?
* "It reflects poorly"...what is reflected poorly?

Group Meeting March 16

Today we went over the slides for our presentation. Sara put them together and as a group we edited them and made them more uniform. We talked about when everyone was going to present, basics of what everyone would speak about and how each person would be introduced.

We then started working on our group interim report. I typed up the original paper. We are going to pass it around to each group member for editing so everyone has their input. I will get it out to Amanda by Sunday night. Amanda will pass it to Jack by Wednesday. Jack will pass it to Sara by Saturday and Sara will send the final copy to every group member by Wednesday, March 27. We will bring any discrepancies to our group meeting on April 2nd and make any necessary changes.

We will practice our speeches individually, as scheduling was hard to meet again soon to go over what each person will say.

We will meet at 7:15 a.m. on April 2 to go over our speech one last time before presenting.

-The tasks were evenly distributed among group members

My assignment from our last meeting on 2/26/13 was to research:
1. What policies do other schools (inside UW system and outside) have for bringing items in their dining halls?
2. How does the pricing of our meal plan match with other schools meal plans. (This is pertinent because if other schools allow personal items in the dining hall, are their prices higher to accommodate for food being stolen from the cafeteria?)

I have not yet looked into whether or not students are allowed to bring personal items into the schools' cafeterias or not. I will be updating this more, just figured I would get the majority of it done. Let me know if you have any other schools you think are important to be looking at.

Today our meeting consisted of communicating exactly what our topic was decided to be. Grace said that every semester one group of students does the gym access. We in response decided to go with our second choice of the security of the cubbies outside of the dinning hall.

A few questions that we established to be important, and need to be answered are:

1. Who is responsible for the cubbies the school or Sedexo?
2. What is the cause of the problem?
3. What is the effect of the problem?
4. What is the original reason for making students leave their belongings outside?
5. What are other schools ( inside UW region and outside) policies on the dinning hall?
6. How does the pricing of our meal plan match to the other schools?
7. Will more people buy meal plans if it is more accessible/safe?
8. Who is affected by this issue?
9. Who may be good people to interview on the subject?
10. Are people avoiding the dinning hall because of the rule?
11. Who can be contacted in the event of something being stolen?

We have split these questions up between the four of us.

For our next meeting we are doing an online blog next week Tuesday just as a check in to see that we are all on track, and everyone has an understanding of what they are looking for. We will have another in person meeting on March 12th @ 4:45 in the library.

Meeting Tuesday 2/19

We met this evening to narrow down which topic we want to do for our project.

We decided the one that stuck out to some of us from the ones we mentioned at our first meeting involved security to student items left in the cubbies outside of Riverside Commons during meal times.  There have been some issues in the past with students have expensive possessions stolen from that area while they're eating in the cafeteria.  Students are forced to leave these items outside because bags and jackets are not allowed inside.  However, there's no real monitor or protection for the possessions left there.

A couple of new ideas were also presented.  These included having racks of rental bikes around campus for students to use on a daily basis, and having gym memberships included in tuition and optional for commuters in order for them to be able to access more training and fitness equipment.  We talked about the current situation with the weight room attached to May Hall and what's available to students at the Knowles Center. There is some question as to what the plan is regarding general student access to the proposed new HHP building.

We decided that if the gym access topic will work, that is the most favored for us.  If not, our second choice will be security for items left outside the dining hall.  During class on Thursday we will ask Grace about this and then we should know our set topic for sure.

We will meet next during group work time in class on Tuesday and if that is not enough time, we will again meet at the library at 4:45 that same evening.

Meeting 1

On Friday, 2/15/13 was our first group meeting. Our group discussed many things in this short amount of time. As a group, we decided that everyone will have shared leadership. When one person presents their task they will be the leader and others will be able to weigh in their thoughts. Also, we will have every group member entering group minutes on our blog, as that is a part of shared leadership and role taking. We will switch off after every meeting for who enters the blog minutes.

Some rules that our group came up with include, but are not limited to:
Showing up on time
Getting work done by the group set deadline
Do your best on every aspect of the project


We are generally available to meet Tuesday and Thursdays from 4:45 to 5:45 and weekends if we need extra time to meet.

We don't yet have a topic, but our group has some very good ideas and we will meet on Tuesday 2/19/13 at 4:45 p.m. outside the library to get our topic and figure out what our first step for the project will be.
